pacific beach san diego

Pacific Beach offers multiple attractions, in addition to having diverse landscapes, dining options, beachfront accommodation and more. In a small stretch of beach, there is a lot going on! In this review, I've assessed various factors, including parking, crowd levels, cleanliness, water quality, safety, amenities, and activities, resulting in an overall score for Pacific Beach of 5.7/10.

You can dive deeper into each of these individual scores on this page. Keep reading for a short summary of each score.

Overall Score: 5.7/10

Parking - 5/10: The parking in Pacific Beach is pretty average. It also differs depending on exactly where you are in the area. In North PB, it's mainly all street parking, while more towards the pier there are paid parking lots available. You should pretty much be able to find a parking spot somewhere within a 10-15 minute walk of the beach, but at peak times that can be more difficult.

Crowds - 4/10: The crowds at Pacific Beach can be a lot at times. The beach does feel cramped, especially the more North you go, as it is narrower during high tides. There also aren't areas on the beach that you can find to get away from the crowds The beach isn't very large, giving the crowd level in Pacific Beach a less than average rating of 4/10.

Amenities - 7/10: Pacific Beach has a lot of amenities offered, particularly in areas that are closest to the pier. You'll find bathrooms, shops, restaurants, bars, sport rentals, and more. There are still bathrooms further away from the pier in North PB, but there aren't many other amenities besides that. In the central areas of the beach you should be able to find anything you're looking for.

Safety - 5/10: As far as beach and water safety in Pacific Beach, the lifeguards heavily patrol the area and do their due diligence. However, this wouldn't be an area where I'd say it's a good idea to leave your belongings behind for extended periods of time. Pacific Beach has a more lively feel to it and is often a cramped, busy beach, so it's best to take precautions to be aware of your surroundings and your belongings.

Beach Cleanliness - 4/10: Beach cleanliness receives a slightly below average rating due to its inconsistent nature. At times, visitors may leave trash behind, which is never pleasant to come across. Additionally, with the quality of the sand in certain places, in addition to being heavily trafficked, it doesn't necessarily feel clean when you're there.

Water Quality - 7/10: The water quality at Pacific Beach is generally safe for swimming. However, like all San Diego beaches, it is advisable to avoid entering the water for at least 72 hours after heavy rainfall.

Activities - 8/10: Pacific Beach offers a wide array of activities, including bike rentals, surfing, beach games, and more. There are multiple options, but not always ample space to enjoy them due to the crowds at times.

Considering these individual scores, San Diego's Pacific Beach achieves an overall rating of 5.7/10. This rating takes into account the varying experiences you can have at different parts of the beach, with some areas offering better experiences depending on your preferences.
