Is Mission Bay safe to swim in? Mission Bay in San Diego is generally considered safe for swimming. The bay's waters are regularly monitored for water quality and safety, and lifeguards are often present at popular swimming areas to ensure the safety of swimmers. However, like any natural body of water, conditions can change, and it's important to be aware of potential hazards, such as strong currents, stingrays, or other marine life.

Is there wildlife in Mission Bay? Yes, Mission Bay contains multiple species such as fish, rays, crabs, seals, dolphins, etc. Dolphins might be less likely to be spotted compared to when by the ocean, but I have seen them jumping around in the bay. Fish, stingrays, and seals are most commonly spotted. None of the marine life are out to harm you, but also take necessary precautions when in a body of water.

  • Summer (June to August): During the summer months, water temperatures in Mission Bay tend to be warm, typically ranging from the mid-60s to the mid-70s degrees Fahrenheit (around 18-24°C). It's a popular time for swimming and water sports in the bay.

These are approximate ranges, and actual water temperatures can vary from year to year.

Other Things to Note

Seagrass: Mission Bay does have seagrass throughout. In some areas, it is more prevalent than in others, and this can also be determined by if it's high or low tide as well. Just something to be aware of if you're swimming or playing in the bay!

Sand Texture: The sand once you're in the water feels quite different from when you're in the ocean. It has more of a muddy or slimy texture to it, so don't be surprised if it feels a bit different than what you might be used to.

SeaWorld Fireworks: The SeaWorld Fireworks go off every weekend from April - Labor Day. During July and August, they often go off every night 10 minutes prior to closing time. The show is often just a few minutes and you can see these fireworks from pretty much anywhere throughout the bay.

Relax: The bay is very relaxing! There are areas that happen to be busier than others, but for the most part, it is very calming. One of the best things to do is grab a floaty and just relax in the water!
