San Diego's Coastal Villages: Charming Coastal Gems
Overall Score: 6.3/10
Summary
Overall, Carlsbad State Beach gets a rating of 6.3/10. Carlsbad has a beautiful stretch of beach with lots to be enjoyed. It's perfect whether you're looking to relax or have an active beach day, as different sections offer different experiences. It really does have it all. The main factors that lowered the score were the limited parking and the crowdedness that can occur. However, if you're able to enjoy a day here, there's lots of fun to be had!
Notable Mention
Please note that there are many different areas of the beach and different factors coming into play as some areas will be more crowded than others. Overall, Carlsbad is a very nice area to enjoy a beach day, and it is in close proximity to several points of interests.

Parking
Parking options at Carlsbad State Beach include street parking on the perpendicular streets off Carlsbad Blvd in the residential area, as well as along Carlsbad Blvd itself. Additionally, there's a parking lot near the intersection of Tamarack Ave and Carlsbad Blvd, although it tends to fill up quickly during peak times, leading to congestion and limited availability.
Due to the train tracks going along the coast and being just .2 miles or about a 5 minute walk from the beach, there isn't as much convenient residential parking available, as the streets dead end into the train tracks. This area between Tamarack Avenue and Pine Avenue covers about half a mile, so during busy times the residential parking here can fill up pretty easily, but it never hurts to try for a spot here!
Additionally, further south along Carlsbad State Beach, the only parking truly available is along the Western side of Carlsbad Blvd., as the lagoon is on the other side.
Another thing to note is that you can also find parking in Carlsbad Village, even if you have to pay for it in some of the lots.
There are technically other neighborhoods that could be parked in with a further walk to the beach, but I'm not sure it would be worth it considering the walk would be hilly and crossing heavily trafficked, high speed roads with a lot of beach gear.
Rating = 5/10 - Parking by the beach in Carlsbad receives an average rating due to it being difficult to get close during peak times but otherwise should be fine.
Crowds
During peak times, Carlsbad beach will have significant crowds, especially when combined with high tides that make the beach feel smaller due to its limited width. Despite this, there is still substantial space available for beachgoers. If you're willing to walk further away from access points, you'll be able to find some stretches that aren't as crowded.
One area of Carlsbad State Beach that can be less crowded is just South of Lifeguard Tower #30. There are really only two access points here and one of them requires going up and down the bluffs, which can be difficult with a lot of beach gear. Due to the only parking being on the West side of Carlsbad Blvd. here and limited access points, there's typically an uncrowded area somewhere along this stretch of beach.
Rating = 5/10 - It can be difficult to find stretches of beach that aren't crowded, especially during high tides or in areas far away from access points and ample parking
Amenities
Carlsbad beach offers a range of amenities. These include benches, picnic tables, and bathrooms for convenience. The beach's proximity to food and restaurants ensures easy access to anything you might need.
Moreover, the paved, promenade walking path provides a scenic route for strolling along the coastline and goes from Carlsbad Village to Cannon Road.
Additionally, being just a short walk away from the shops in Carlsbad Village offers further dining and shopping options.
It is important to note that most of these amenities are in the beach area surrounding Carlsbad Village and Tamarack Avenue. The further South you go from Tamarack Avenue, there aren't easily accessible options for food, and for bathrooms there are porta potties.
Rating = 7/10 -There are plenty of amenities available for use within walking distance of the beach, especially near Carlsbad Village.
Safety
The beach is considered relatively safe, with lifeguards patrolling the area to ensure visitors' well-being. However, as with any natural environment, there are inherent risks, and visitors should exercise caution, especially in highly trafficked areas like the beach and ocean.
Additionally, certain stretches of the beach, particularly the stretches South of Tamarack Avenue, might be more rocky. As you go far enough South of Lifeguard Tower #30, there is a reef to be aware of as well.
***Please note that the ocean is unpredictable and there can be strong currents anywhere on the beach at any time. Be sure to take necessary precautions before getting in the water and always ask a lifeguard if it is safe if you are unsure.
Rating = 7/10 - This beach is typically patrolled and has a solid lifeguard presence throughout.
Beach Cleanliness
Carlsbad beach maintains a relatively clean environment, slightly above average compared to other beaches in San Diego. While it may not stand out as exceptionally clean, it is generally well-maintained. However, the high traffic at times increases the likelihood of littering.
Overall, there aren't typically any concerns about the cleanliness or quality of sand here.
Rating = 6/10 - The beach is slightly above average in cleanliness, as it doesn't stick out as clean or dirty either way.
Water Quality
The Water Quality at Carlsbad State Beach is generally the same throughout. It is generally safe to swim in the water, meaning the levels of bacteria in the water do not exceed the recommended amount. The water is tested by the City of San Diego every six days and posted on this website: County of San Diego Beach Water Quality (sdbeachinfo.com). It never hurts to check the status before going to the beach to make sure it's safe.
It is important to note that after rain, it is recommended to wait at least 72 hours before getting back in the water due to increased contaminants and sewage going in the ocean, especially near storm drains, rivers, and lagoon outlets.
Rating = 7/10 - Typically clean, unless there is a storm. Be sure to avoid areas by the lagoon outlets in Carlsbad and such in those cases.
Activities
Carlsbad beach offers a diverse range of activities to cater to various interests. From surfing, boogie boarding, swimming, beach volleyball and other beach games, there's something for everyone. Paddle boarding can also be done in the ocean or in the nearby Carlsbad lagoon.
Additionally, the promenade is a nice paved walking path along the shore providing opportunities for leisurely strolls or runs while enjoying the coastal scenery.
Rating = 7/10 - There are multiple activities to be enjoyed, offering more than a lot of SD beaches, but it can feel like there is limited space to enjoy some of the activities or like there might not be as much action as other beaches in San Diego.

Staying in vacation rentals from sites like VRBO, Airbnb, Homestay, etc. can be a great choice in Carlsbad, and there are typically a lot of options available. Transportation
Carlsbad
The best way to get around Carlsbad is by car, foot, or bike. See below for more information.

The best way to get around depends on what you plan to do, where you're staying, and the time of year. During busy times such as 4th of July, there is limited parking so using your car is probably the worst way to get around, especially at peak times.
If you are flying into the San Diego airport, I recommend renting a car so that you can explore other areas too. There are many rental car companies to choose from at the airport.
Walking or biking between your vacation rental or hotel to the beach and to restaurants is a great option if you can handle it. Especially if you're staying in or near Calrsbad Village, everything you'd need is within easy walking distance, and that's definitely the easiest way to explore that area!
Overall, I believe it's best to have a car, as that gives you freedom to explore other areas without having to worry about public transport or lyfts/ubers. As long as you keep in mind where you are going and the parking situation, you should be fine. If exploring other areas nearby such as La Jolla, downtown, etc., you might have to pay to park if it is crowded.
